How we teach it

Knowing the content is half the exam. We teach the other half.

Plenty of students know their period inside out and still sit at a grade 5, because GCSE History marks arguments, not knowledge. Every lesson here ends on real past-paper questions from your own board, written under time and marked against the level descriptors the examiner actually uses.

  • AQA 8145, Edexcel 1HI0 and OCR J411, matched to your exact option codes
  • Source questions answered with provenance and context, not description
  • Interpretation questions: why historians disagree, and how to say so for marks
  • The 16-mark essay planned in three minutes and written in paragraphs that argue

The same essay engine powers our GCSE English Literature tuition; plenty of students take both.

The essay method

From knowing the content to winning the marks

Read the stem, name the gameEach question type has its own mark scheme. Students learn to spot which one they are facing before writing a word.
Plan in three minutesA judgement, three supporting points and the counter-argument, sketched before the first paragraph starts.
Write paragraphs that arguePoint, evidence, explanation, link back to the question. Description sits in the bottom level; argument reaches the top one.
Mark against the levelsStudents grade their own timed answers with the real level descriptors until strong writing becomes a habit, not a hope.
Description scores level 1. Argument scores level 4.
Common questions

GCSE History, asked straight

How much does it cost to sit GCSE History as a private candidate?

Entry is £300 at Birmingham, which covers the board fee, invigilation and your seat, with slightly higher fees at our London and Manchester centres. Entries for the summer 2027 series close on 1 February 2027.

Which GCSE History specifications do you cover?

AQA 8145, Edexcel 1HI0 and OCR J410 or J411. History entries carry option codes for your periods and depth studies, so bring those to the diagnostic and we match both the tuition and the exam entry to them exactly.

How do you teach source questions?

We teach source questions by working real past-paper sources from your board, asking who made it, when and why, and what that does to its usefulness, before a word of the answer is written. Description is the habit we break first; provenance and context are what the levels reward.

Can home-educated students sit GCSE History with you?

Yes. Most of our private candidates are home educated, you register directly with us through the booking form, and because GCSE History has no coursework there is nothing a school would need to sign off.
