Functional Skills Maths Level 2 is the fast, recognised route past a missing GCSE grade 4: a TQUK qualification sat at our JCQ-approved Birmingham centre, 2341 Coventry Road, Sheldon, with dates through the year and an assessment split into a non-calculator section and a calculator section. Level 1 is also available as the stepping stone.
The maths qualification, without the wait
If a missing maths grade is holding up an apprenticeship sign-off, a nursing application or a university offer, you have two routes: resit the GCSE, or take Functional Skills Level 2. The GCSE runs twice a year with hard deadlines. Functional Skills runs when you are ready, and the content is the maths people actually use: money, percentages, ratio, measures, and reading charts and data.

Two sections, one sitting
The assessment opens with a short non-calculator section that checks core number work, then a longer calculator section where the real problem-solving happens. Our preparation mirrors that split: number fluency drills first, then timed practice on the worded, multi-step questions that decide a pass. One-to-one sessions are £40 an hour, in centre or online, and most near-miss candidates need only a short run of them.

Functional Skills Maths FAQs
Is Functional Skills Maths Level 2 accepted instead of GCSE Maths?
Yes in most cases: apprenticeship completion rules accept it outright, and many universities, including many nursing courses, accept it in place of a GCSE grade 4. A minority of competitive courses still name the GCSE, so check your offer first; if you need the GCSE itself, we run resits at £250 in Birmingham.
Can I use a calculator in Functional Skills maths?
Yes, for most of the assessment. There is a shorter non-calculator section that checks core number skills, then a longer calculator section for the multi-step problems. We prepare you for both, and the non-calculator drills are usually the quickest marks to secure.
How quickly can I sit Functional Skills Maths at your centre?
Usually within weeks. TQUK dates run through the year, so as soon as a diagnostic says you are ready we book the next available sitting at Coventry Road. There is no waiting for a November or June series and no entry deadline to miss.
