A-Team Academy delivers TQUK Functional Skills qualifications in maths, English and ICT at our JCQ-approved Birmingham centre, 2341 Coventry Road, Sheldon. Unlike GCSEs, exam dates run throughout the year, and Level 2 carries the same standing as a GCSE grade 4 for apprenticeships, university access and nursing applications.

What they are

The recognised alternative to GCSE

THE RECOGNISED ALTERNATIVE TO GCSE

Functional Skills are national qualifications in the maths, English and digital skills people actually use at work. They exist for everyone the GCSE timetable does not fit: apprentices who must hold Level 2 English and maths to complete, adults applying for nursing or teaching, and anyone whose plans are blocked by a missing grade 4.

Level 1 is the stepping stone. Level 2 is the one employers, apprenticeship providers and many universities accept in place of a GCSE grade 4. GCSE resit entries for November 2026 close on 1 October 2026; Functional Skills has no equivalent deadline, because TQUK assessments are booked on demand and we simply put you on the next available date.

Functional Skills Maths

Level 2 is the fast route past a missing GCSE grade 4. One non-calculator section, one calculator section, dates all year.

Maths, Level 1 and 2 ->

Functional Skills English

Reading, writing, and speaking, listening and communicating. Pass all three parts and Level 2 stands beside GCSE grade 4.

English, Level 1 and 2 ->

Functional Skills ICT

Practical digital skills, assessed by hands-on tasks at a computer: files, documents, spreadsheets, email and online safety.

Sit the exam only, or add one-to-one preparation at £40 an hour, in centre or online. Candidates who missed a grade 4 narrowly often need only a short run of sessions.

FUNCTIONAL SKILLS FAQS

Is Functional Skills Level 2 equivalent to a GCSE?

Functional Skills Level 2 sits at the same level as a GCSE grade 4 and is accepted as its equivalent by apprenticeship providers and many universities, including many nursing courses. A few competitive courses still ask for the GCSE itself, so check the course page first; if you do need the GCSE, we run resits too.

When can I sit a Functional Skills exam?

Throughout the year. TQUK Functional Skills assessments are booked on demand rather than in fixed series, so once you are ready we book you onto the next available date at our Birmingham centre. There is no 1 October or 1 February entry deadline to miss.

How much does a Functional Skills exam cost?

Fees are quoted when you enquire, because subject, level and sitting affect the price. Send the enquiry form and we confirm your exact total within one working day, before you pay anything.

Do you offer tuition as well as the exam?

Yes. You can sit the assessment only, or add one-to-one preparation at £40 an hour at the centre or online. We start with a short diagnostic so you only pay for the sessions you actually need.
