Didn't get the grades you needed? You're in better company than you think. Tens of thousands of students resit GCSEs every year, and a resit grade replaces the old one for almost everything that matters, from sixth form to university to work.
Who can Retake GCSEs in 2026?
Anyone. There's no age limit and no need to be at a school. If you've left, you register as a private candidate through a JCQ-approved exam centre like ours, and we handle the entry, the exam and the results.
When can you resit?
English language and maths can be resat in the November series, which is the fast route that saves you a year. Everything else runs in the main May and June series. Entries for November 2026 close on 1 October 2026, and entries for May/June 2027 close on 1 February 2027. Late entries cost more, so the rule is simple: register early.
Do you need to re-study everything?
Usually not. Most resit students are closer to their target than they realise, and focused work on the weakest topics moves the needle fastest. That's why we let you pair a resit entry with targeted tuition.
Retaking as an adult
A large share of our resit candidates are adults: career changers who need Maths and English for a training course, parents finishing what school interrupted, and professionals opening a university access route. The process is exactly the same as for any private candidate, you register with us, we handle the entry, and you sit in the same calm halls. Nobody in the room knows or cares how long ago you left school.
What does it cost?
Fees vary by board and subject. GCSE entry is £250 a subject at our Birmingham centre, AS entry is £350 and a full A-level is £400, with the board fee, invigilation and your seat all included. London fees run higher than Birmingham, with exact figures on the fees page. Our fees page has current pricing, and leaving entry late adds board surcharges on top. If you want the pass handled as well as the paper, the GCSE Resit Programme runs the teaching, the mocks and the entry as one plan.
Will universities know I resat?
They'll see the exam date, but for most courses a resit grade is treated exactly like a first sitting. The grade is what counts.
Can I resit a single paper?
No. GCSE resits mean sitting the full set of papers for that subject in one series.
