GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER 1 | COMPLETE OVERVIEW | QUESTION 2 WALKTHROUGH NOV 2020 EXAMS
So one common thing that tends to happen quite often is that students overspend their time on question 2 and try over explaining themselves and this leaves them vulnerable for the subsequent questions.
So just to make it a little bit easier I’m going to be using the November 2019 paper to go through the actual question so you can follow that with me; the link is down below:
I found this extract to be quite a pleasant one as it was actually an intriguing read and the characters were quite relatable. There were also plenty of techniques to pick out from this one.
So let’s have a quick read of segment for question 2:
There are many ways you could be looking out for techniques and there is no one right or wrong way of doing this. I tend to advise students to stay simple and look out for things you know about as oppose to try and identify techniques that you don’t know so well – as that can cost you – and makes you look silly.
JUST REMEMBER the task of this question is NOT to list as many techniques as you can find but rather select a few and in my opinion the few that you select if you could link them together to show the effect it has on the reader – then you’re on way to acing this exam. I’m going to repeat that for emphasis – remember it is all about the IMPACT these techniques are having.
Now as you just saw there as I’m reading this segment I plucking out techniques now this is something you should also be doing as you read BUT but but but – what you don’t want to do by just identifying these techniques is to then write did it out in this way. So when you come to write this is where the planning is so important. Remember what I just said you want to be combining the most effective techniques together to deliver the point you are making.
Remember that in order to get the top marks you have to say something perceptive. This means you have to interpret the text yourself and imagine trying to summarise it to a friend what would you say? There’s no one perfect way of answering it but you can mix it up but as long as you’re covering the various aspects the examiners are looking for you’ll be fine.
So.. to summarise question 2:
1.Make sure the subject terminology you use – you know what it means and you’re confident of using it in the right context
2.Make references to the text and most importantly the EFFECT it has
3.Remember to produce a quality response you need to be perceptive and you’re not just listing a bunch of techniques
4.Lastly I haven’t mentioned this but since you’ve watched up and till this point – you don’t need to write about all 3 bullet points – these are just suggestions. Also don’t overspend your time on this questions. Students tend to ask me how long to spend and I say don’t go beyond 10 mins of writing. That’s not a lot of time but it think it would be sufficient to write two decent paragraphs or 3 short paragraphs if you’re able to squeeze it out.
