Private candidate FAQs

Booking, exam day and results, answered

The questions our exams team answers every day, updated for the 2026/27 series. Anything else, talk to Dorian, our specialist exams webchat agent, in the chat bubble in the corner of this page.

Exam dates are set nationally, so private candidates sit at exactly the same time as school candidates across the UK. GCSEs run in May and June, with a November series for English Language and Maths resits. IGCSEs run in November and May/June, and we do not run a January sitting. AS and A-levels run in May and June, with Cambridge International A-levels also offered in October/November. Your exact dates depend on your board: check our exam dates page or ask us through the registration form above.

Four things: the exam code for each paper (your course provider can confirm it), your full name and date of birth exactly as on your passport or driving licence, your contact details, and your UCI if you have sat UK exams before; if not, we allocate one. For access arrangements, send current evidence (an EHCP, JCQ Form 8 or a specialist report); without it a private assessment may be needed. Upload your ID with the registration form above or email examsofficer@ateamacademy.co.uk and bring the same ID on exam day.

Arrive about thirty minutes early with the photo ID you registered with, black pens in a transparent pencil case, any calculator or geometry equipment your paper allows (we do not provide calculators), and a bottle of water with the label removed. Your timetable or statement of entry is helpful but not essential. Phones, smartwatches, earbuds and every other electronic device must be switched off and handed to the invigilator: being found with one during an exam, even switched off, normally means disqualification under JCQ rules, and no centre can overturn that

Around six months before the exams is ideal, and it keeps you clear of late fees. November 2026 entries close on 1 October 2026, and 1 September 2026 for Cambridge IGCSE. May/June 2027 entries close on 1 February 2027. Entries after the deadline are sometimes possible, but board late fees apply and seats are limited

Most Birmingham candidates sit at our Coventry Road centre, with free parking directly outside and quick links from the city centre and Solihull, and we also run centres across London, Manchester and Liverpool. Once booked, you receive a personalised timetable with your candidate number, dates, times and venue, and every fee is on our fees page. Bring valid photo ID to every paper and plan the journey in advance, because exams cannot be delayed for late arrivals.

Some subjects carry an assessed element on top of the written papers: the GCSE English speaking endorsement, IGCSE English coursework, NEA supervision, and the A-level science practicals, which we run in a board-approved laboratory. Speaking exams for the language GCSEs are included in the language entry fee. Tell us on the registration form if you need these, or send evidence if you completed them in a previous sitting. Every assessed extra is priced on the fees page

Yes, if you decide to withdraw before the exam entry deadline, we can issue a refund less a non-refundable administration fee of £100 per subject (some subjects incur a higher administration fee) plus any applicable transaction fees.

As each exam booking requires administrative processing and reserves a place with the awarding body, we strongly recommend that you only book once you are certain you intend to sit the examination.

After the exam entry deadline, refunds cannot be provided. By this stage, your examination entry has been submitted, the awarding body fees have been paid, and your exam seat has been reserved. Your place can no longer be reallocated to another candidate.

If unforeseen circumstances prevent you from sitting your exam, please contact us as soon as possible and provide supporting evidence
